didn't cause an overflow or siphon break but it did make air get caught in the tube which i didn't figure out for a week when I finally decided to take the tube out and found it. Again this can be mostly avoided with good design (the U-tube going far enough into the tank box where snails cant get underneath) but it has happened. You can still have things go wrong with the U-tube style (mainly a snail climbing in and obstucting flow in which case the tank is pumped with water but it doesn't drain even though the siphon never breaks.
